Can AI tools really write my articles for me?

04 Aug 23

Are you spending hours writing content and wondering if AI could be the way forward? Have you been wondering if AI tools can handle the whole writing process for you?

Blogs, social media, email and website copy are all incredibly important to building an effective content marketing strategy. However, the key to success is creating high-quality, customer-centric content quickly and consistently which is no easy task.

We’ve been writing content for years now and when we heard that we could now use AI to produce all our work in minutes, we were excited and had to test it out.

We’ve been working around with different AI text general tools for a while now, so we wanted to give you an honest review of whether or not these tools actually could replace us human writers, and if they really can save us time by taking care of the content for us.

This article lists our findings on the strengths and weaknesses of text-based AI solely as content-generating platforms to see if AI can create polished marketing content.

What is AI-based text generation?

As we said above, AI-based text generation tools can be used to produce copy for different platforms, from social media to full website articles.

These tools produce outputs based on prompts given by you. They use Deep Learning (a machine-based learning that uses multiple layers of processing to pull info from data) search the Internet for content and then create their own based on what they’ve learned.

So, you could ask a tool like ChatGPT, Bard or Jasper to write an article for you on any topic of your choosing, and something that would have taken you hours to write is done within a couple of seconds. It sounds great, right?

The upside of AI content writers

AI can really help to expedite your content creation process. This section will run through all that Ai can offer your content creation.

This section will run through the ways AI text-generation tools can help you write articles.

  • Automatic spelling and grammar checkers

The main benefit of working with AI is that worrying about your spelling and grammar is a thing of the past.

With AI tools such as GrammarlyChatGPT and Jasper AI, automatic and intelligent programming can create and review content that is grammatically accurate.

  • Faster content creation

AI tools are all about speed and efficiency, so working with AI you’ll be able to produce content in a much more efficient manner.

Unlike humans, AI doesn’t need to spend hours trawling the internet to get the information needed to write the article, and it doesn’t have to spend time thinking about the best way to say something. All of that is done in a matter of seconds.

Not only will review time be shortened due to the lack of spelling and grammar errors but a well-prompted AI generator can create a cohesive piece of work almost as quickly as you can write the prompt for it.

  • Multilingual content creation

AI tools like ChatGPT can create content in over 50 different languages, exceeding the ability of the average content writer. Using learning technology this content can help get your message across the globe.

  • Keyword optimisation

AI tools such as Outranking and Surfer SEO can be used to easily create search engine-optimised content for your website.

Instead of independently searching for the highest-ranking keywords and coming up with a plan on how to rank for them, these tools find them for you and automatically incorporate them into your articles. Beyond keywords, they will also ensure that articles are written in a search engine-friendly way.

So, even copywriters with limited SEO knowledge can create articles designed to rank on search engines and bring in more traffic.

What are the main problems with AI as a content writer?

AI text-generating technology still has a long way to go.

This section outlines the main issues with generative AI content, which may mean you can’t totally hand over article writing to the computers just yet.

  • They can produce inaccurate information

Inaccurate and misinformation is one of the main problems with AI-generated content. AI can’t tell what is true and what it’s false, it only knows what is popular and takes that as the truth.

With AIs like Jasper and Bard, they search for information on the internet and use the most popular sites as sources for their information. It also pulls its own information, given to it by other users. There is no fact-checking software with these tools so it can’t be guaranteed to be always right.

If you don’t fact-check the work of AI, you can end up spreading misinformation, which can have serious consequences – as these 2 lawyers from New York found out the hard way when they used ChatGPT to help with a case.

So, you absolutely do need to review content produced by AI before making it public, to check that it is factually accurate – meaning the whole writing process can’t be completely taken over by AI.

  • They struggle with tone of voice

Tone of voice is a super important part of content creation and can be tricky to get just right, even for humans. For AI, it’s even harder, most tools are still learning the many ways tone can be expressed and so currently struggle to do it accurately.

This often means going in to adjust copy once it’s written, and ensuring it represents your company. The importance of striking the right tone can’t be overstated, and you can learn more in our guide to brand messaging.

  • They struggle with long forms of content

After investigating a range of different AI content generators, many of them struggle to create long-form versions of content, usually returning a simplistic overview when asked to write a full article.

Even when prompted to write an article of a certain length, some still didn’t meet the word count, whilst others produced information that wasn’t relevant or informative.

This doesn’t mean they can’t be used to write longer articles, just that human input is needed to break the article down into separate prompts and then piece the outputs together to create a cohesive article. This is really the best way to get the level of detail that you’re looking for.

  • The need for strong prompts

With AI you can only get out what you put into it which means if you want to create high-quality content you must come up with strong high-quality prompts. If you don’t put, go prompts into the AI the content it’ll generate will be weak and generic.

To learn about how to give AI the best prompts have a look at our article on ChatGPT.

Can AI write articles for me?

When it comes to text-based AI, you get out what you put into it. By learning how to optimise your AI requests with the right prompts, AI can generate good articles for you in a fraction of the time it can take you to write them.

However, this doesn’t mean they’re suitable to post online straight away. The main problems with AI-generated content are sizeable and if not addressed can be harmful to your brand and your website.

As more people have started to explore AI, more and more people have found that it’s easier to recognise. This can also hurt your company as people might become distrustful of your articles and the information you’re sharing, people want to know that you’ve put time and effort into your content, to ensure its genuinely valuable.
